This is according to the Press release from the Ministry of foreign Affairs and International relations.
The press release further indicates that this appointment, made with the recommendation and support of the Government of Lesotho, highlights the AU’s trust in Lesotho’s seasoned statesmen and the Kingdom’s growing role in advancing democracy, governance, and integration across the continent.
Ambassador Ntsiuoa Sekete, Lesotho's Permanent Representative to the AU, hailed the appointment as a national honour:
“We celebrate this recognition of Mr. Mosisili's statesmanship as a national honour. The appointment testifies to the vision of Prime Minister Sam Matekane, who has shown leadership in embracing inclusivity and recognising the enduring contributions of past leaders in our democratic journey'', she said.
She stated that Lesotho remains committed to championing democratic governance systems within the African Union and ensuring that integration is anchored on accountability, people-centred leadership, and credible electoral processes.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr. Lejone Mpotjoane, also welcomed the AU’s decision, emphasising Lesotho’s active role in strengthening democracy:
“PM Matekane made it clear that former Prime Ministers should be engaged and supported to contribute leadership and expertise to the Continental Union through platforms such as the Panel of the Wise and AU Election Observation Missions. We commend the AU leadership for positively receiving our recommendation, and more engagements of former leaders will be communicated in due course.”
As Africa continues to refine its democratic systems, the appointment of Mr. Mosisili to this high-profile role reaffirms Lesotho’s enduring contribution to peace, credible elections, and the continent’s broader vision of integration and renewal.
