The Members of Parliament (MPs) in the National Assembly debated the implementation of curriculum that enables three pathways at basic level on Wednesday. Mrs. Mamello Phooko who represents the Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD) on Proportional Representation (PR) said they urge the Government of Lesotho to implement the already developed curriculum that will operationalise three pathways at Basic Education. She said these three pathways are grades 8 to 11, namely vocational, technical and academia
streams and to introduce grade 12 in order to afford the completing students a chance of straight admission to tertiary schools without being required to take bridging courses. Mrs Phooko said if implemented it will improve the standard and quality of education in the country as well as cut the unnecessary costs of students who are forced to take bridging courses for admission at tertiary schools. She stated that many students are unable to go to tertiary schools as they are being frustrated
by not being admitted in the schools of their choice as they are not being admitted for not having relevant qualifications.Mrs Phooko believed that if the implementation of the three pathways curriculum could be undertaken, it would reduce the high number of students who end up indulging in gangsterism due to frustration of not pursuing their tertiary education.
She stated that they will realise their careers early and pursue them without encountering any challenges as they would have a wide range of options of whether to go to vocational training, technical schools or become academia. Democratic Congress (DC) Legislator on Proportional Representation (PR) Mrs. ‘Mabafokeng Mpobole seconded the motion saying there are cases where some of the students reach grade 8 in the country but are unable to read or write or not able to make a sentence in English.
