Maseru--Movement for Economic Change (MEC) held its 3rd elective conference on Friday and Saturday this week which saw Mrs. Ts'epang Ts'ita-Mosena losing her deputy leader position. She lost against Mrs. 'Makhojane Monyane who won with 869 votes while Mosena got 516 votes.
Although the leader's position was up for grabs, no one expressed an intention to challenge the incumbent Mr. Selibe Mochoboroane and this means that he retains his position unopposed. The General Secretary position is still retained by Mr. Napo Moshoeshoe with 680 votes against Kemang Molichaba with 76 and Sello Ts'ukulu with 46.
The Treasurer position was won by Leboea Khoaele with 485 votes. While the deputy General Secretary is Moleboheng Pule. The chairperson of the conference position is still retained by Rorisang Mokuena who is deputised by Motlatsi Nts'ala.
Meanwhile the party's Spokesperson is Mr. Nkejane Lethoba who is deputised by Ms. Mpho Moloi. The Publicist position was won by Ms. Palesa Ntakatsane and her deputy is Mokete Dlukula. Other members are Phatela Masupha, Rethabile Lenanya, Lerotholi Mokhabi and Rets'elisitsoe Gudoka.
MEC was established in January 2017 by Mr. Mochoboroane following his separation from Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD) of which he was Secretary General appointed at the party annual general meeting in 2015.
He took a much questioned cross-bench position in the National Assembly claiming support of either government or opposition, when necessary, with the aim of diverting political attention to economic growth and away from the congress or national regimes of vengeance and divisions but rather a nation of oneness for Basotho.
In the June 2017 elections, the MEC received 5% of the votes, winning six seats including a constituency seat by the leader. Therefore, it landed the position of being the 4th biggest party in the country after the All-Basotho Convention (ABC), Democratic Congress (DC) and Alliance of Democrats (AD).
Following the 2022 elections, MEC reached an agreement with the newly formed Revolution For Prosperity (RFP) and with AD to form a government led by RFP leader and current Prime Minister Mr. Ntsokoane Matekane. It has four seats in the National Assembly
