As part of her activities during her stay in Lesotho, the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, accompanied by Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso and the UN Resident Coordinator, Ms. Amanda Khozi Mukwashi visited the soon-to-be-launched Multi-Purpose Centre for Survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Maseru.

The centre is designed to offer comprehensive support to survivors of GBV, including psychosocial services, medical care, legal services, childhood development services and livelihood skills training.

It is during this visit that the Deputy Secretary General and the Queen planted a tree at the centre as a symbolic gesture representing new beginnings for the survivors and a space for reflection, healing and hope.

During her stay in Lesotho, Ms. Mohammed is expected to amongst others meet with the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority to review the progress of key infrastructure projects under the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, which has significant social and economic implications for the Basotho people adding that she will also attend a “Pitso” in Thaba Bosiu with traditional leaders to discuss their role in advancing sustainable development, particularly in water management, gender inclusion and community development.

In Maseru, Ms. Mohammed will participate in a youth dialogue, engaging with young people on issues of employment, education, innovation and their critical role in driving sustainable development.

The dialogue aims to highlight youth voices in Lesotho’s future, fostering their participation in decision-making processes.

As part of her visit also the UN Deputy Secretary General will meet with key political leaders, including King Letsie III and the Prime Minister Samuel Matekane.

The meetings will cover Lesotho’s progress toward Agenda 2030 and UN support in areas such as governance, social inclusion and economic development.
