UPCOMING DISTRICT NUTRITION CAMPAIGN UNVEILED

Qacha’s Nek ___ Mr. Thabo Koloti, the District Food and Nutrition Coordinating Officer, has announced the launch of the District Nutrition Campaign, scheduled for October 16, 2024.

This event will introduce the campaign mascot, with the official launch taking place on October 17 at Tebellong.

During a Head of Departments (HODs) meeting on Thursday, Mr. Koloti emphasized that the campaign is a response to recent findings from Tebellong LECSA Hospital, which indicate a rising incidence of goiter.

“Goitre is often due to a lack of iodized salt, so it's crucial for residents to understand the importance of micronutrients in their diets,” he stated, highlighting the evolving understanding of undernutrition and the necessary nutrition intervention programs.

He noted that micronutrient malnutrition is widespread and likely the most significant nutritional challenge globally, including in Lesotho.

Mr. Koloti called for support from stakeholders, stressing that this initiative is for the benefit of the entire district, particularly given its high malnutrition rate—47.9 percent stunting.

He added that the initiative has the backing of the World Food Programme (WFP). In light of these concerns, District Administrator Mr. Habofanoe Pheku urged HODs to cultivate crops and rear chickens at home to promote good nutrition.

“We must practice what we preach regarding nutrition,” he said.

As the District Nutrition Campaign prepares to launch, it presents a vital opportunity for community engagement and education on the importance of micronutrients. Together, malnutrition can be combatted and healthier lifestyles for all residents promoted.
