Maimane resigns as DA leader.
25 October 2019 | 16:54

Leader of the main opposition party in South Africa Democratic Alliance (DA) ‘Musi Maimane; resigned as the party leader yesterday.

In his resignation statement, Maimane said when he was elected leader of the DA in May 2015, he went out of his way to set out a strong, a diverse and an authentically South African organization, that ultimately must remove the ANC from national government, and in turn work hard in government to free the majority of South Africans, from the shackles of poverty in dignity and despair.

He said in order to do so, he was always crucial that the DA will grow and transform into a party, which all South African would call home.

He said the DA in its own history has been seen a party for minorities, that the majority of South Africans mainly black people, did not relate to it and struggled to trust it.

He said this had to change and they began to campaign in many communities, specifically in black communities to spearhead growth.

Maimane said in 2016 the DA removed ANC from the government in the country’s large cities, and formed coalition government in cities like Johannesburg, and they worked hard to restore the dignity of poor by creating employment and improving service delivery.

He said over the past few months it became clear to him, that there exists a few within the DA, who do not see eye to eye with him.

He said there have been several months of consistent and coordinated attacks against him and his leadership, to ensure that their vision fails or he fails.

He said this extended to a campaign that was run on the front pages of Afrikaans weekly paper, in an attempt to undermine his name and integrity.
