The Movement for Economic Change (MEC) Women’s League launched the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence in Maseru on Monday 25th November 2019.

In a statement the women said Lesotho as a part of international countries, vowed to join international campaigns to challenge violence against women and girls, and to implement laws protecting the rights of women and girls.

They pleaded with Basotho to stop women and girls abuse that include gruesome killings, rape and assault.

They further urged the police to hold women and girls abuse awareness campaigns, and to educate Basotho about preventing abuse in all of its forms.

In their statement they advised Basotho to report abuse to the police in time, and also encouraged the police to prosecute suspects of women and girls abuse, so that legal measures are taken against them.

The women’s league also appealed to the Government of Lesotho to enact laws against domestic violence, and to implement the existing Sexual Offences Act of 2006, which has clear sections for punishing people who are found guilty of women and girls abuse.

They also called on to the government to take legal measures against members of parliament, and government ministers who are suspects in the cases of women and girls abuse.
