Tšehlanayne Park Manager Mr. Teboho Selikane said that due to the hot weather conditions, snakes cannot stand the heat saying that they are bound to seek cooler places thus they will then move into houses and even under trees.

Selikane said On Saturday, a child aged from ‘Muela Botha-Bothe was bitten by a snake while lying under a tree with her mother and has since died. He also pointed out that the only problem is that where they find human beings, the tendency is that they think or believe that they are being attacked hence they will retaliate and bite people nearby.

He explained that there is no exact cause of snakes being available in large numbers saying however that as hunting strategy they go to premises to find prey because small creatures also resort to cooler places to get away from the heat.

On the other hand, he advised people not to leave doors and windows open especially when they go far, adding that they should also observe surroundings before sitting under trees.

Meanwhile Lesotho has around 25 different types of snakes. Three species are highly venomous while three others can inflict a rather painful bite and six species are considered mildly venomous. 13 species are harmless. Since January about 40 different snakes have been found in the country.
