YOUTH MAINTAIN CLEAN ENVIRONMENT, COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE
YOUTH MAINTAIN CLEAN ENVIRONMENT, COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE

To embrace practices that withstand the effects of climate change while also maintaining a clean environment, youth will engage in a cleaning campaign to commence at St. James high this weekend.

These are Green Anglican (GA) youth members in collaboration with Anglican Students Federation (ASF) respectively. The GA Coordinator, Rapelang Korotjoe told the Agency that the cleaning campaign is part of their efforts geared towards supporting the country in its endeavour to keep Lesotho clean.

He added that this campaign will start at St. James, whereby it will also proceed to different places in the city of Maseru. “As future leaders, we owe it to ourselves to take ownership and protect our country”, he stressed.

Korotjoe indicated that the impacts of climate change are increasingly apparent in Lesotho and in other parts of the country, thus this is a measure to combat climate change while also sustaining livelihoods.

He appealed to youth to actively partake in this initiative, saying it will also be followed by a youth conference, giving provision for them to re-define their roles in church, in their country as well as encouraging their peers in different communities.

Similarly, the Agency has learnt that in addressing climate change, the International Organisation for Migration – IOM UN Migration is engaged in a supporting climate adoptive solution in Lesotho through policy and a community based green economy pilot.

This area of support by UN Migrations aims to support the Lesotho government to take a leading role in adopting strategies that enhance climate resilience.

Combating climate change is in line with goal number 13 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s), to address climate change hence countries adopted the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rise to well below two degrees Celsius.
