MINISTRY OF ENERGY STRENGTHENS CLIMATE SERVICES IN LESOTHO
Ministry of Energy strengthens climate services in Lesotho

Ministry of Energy and Meteorology through the Department of Meteorology, has validated the project for strengthening climate services in Lesotho, for climate resilient development in order to report early warnings of climate disasters.

Speaking at the meeting the Minister of Energy Honorable Mokoto Hloaele, said the formulation of the project document has been made possible through the support of the United Nations Environment, and it went through vigorous consultation processes with inputs from all stakeholders and beneficiaries.

He said the objective of the project is to strengthen Lesotho’s climate-related monitoring capabilities and early warning systems, to ensure the availability of information for responding to climate shocks, and planning adaptation strategies for climate change.

He further said this will be achieved by increasing the capacity of meteorological services, to monitor and predict extreme weather, climate related hazards and climate trends.

Honorable Hloaele said the efficient and effective use of these tailored climate warnings and advisories, will be timely communicated to all citizens in Lesotho.

At the same meeting the Director of  Meteorological Services Mrs ‘Mathabo Mahahabisa, said the project will enable the department to disseminate information about warnings in time, and to strengthen existing information strategies.

She however pointed out that the department is faced with lack of experts in climate change.
