Following president Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement, in support of Constitutional amendments aimed at land expropriation without compensation, the wheels of reform are beginning to turn quickly.

The African National Congress (ANC) is moving swiftly along with the contentious issue of wide-scale land reform and redress and has  now earmarked 139 farms for expropriation without compensation, in what they say is a practical trial of ‘land affirmative action’.

Self-proclaimed political revolutionaries, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), initially spearheaded the idea land nationalisation.

The ANC had distanced itself from the idea of all land being owned by the state – but have yet to detail the process or operations relating to land expropriation without compensation.

Zizi Kodwa, head of the presidency and a top ANC NEC member, has refused to divulge specific information relating to this ‘trial’ process of expropriation, which is now being  prioritised by the government.

Instead, Kodwa chose to speak on issues of investor confidence and redress of social oppression, saying:

“Both domestic and international investors must appreciate that long-term investment is tied [to] ownership of land by the majority of people reiterating that  sustainable long-term certainty, is tied to addressing the injustices of the past. He confirmed that the parliamentary process involving the amendment of section 25 of the Constitution would be concluded by the end of the year.
