Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC) has refuted allegations making rounds on social media that workers have embarked on a countrywide strike for not getting the 13th cheque.LEC Stakeholder Relations Manager Mr. Makhetha Mots'oari said it is not true that workers are on strike saying that the company is fully operational.
Commenting on the issue of bonuses, he said bonus is given when the company has made profits emphasising that it is a complement and not a must.He indicated that even if there were profits, they have a lot to do such as maintenance of the network to curb power outages. He added that with the high unemployment rate in the country, the profits could also be used for youth apprenticeship.
He alleyed the nation's fear regarding recent power outages saying it is just routine and nothing much.The Lesotho Electricity Company (Pty) Ltd (LEC) is wholly owned by the Government of Lesotho (GoL). It has been registered in terms of the Companies Act of 1967 (as amended) and established in 2006 in terms of the LEC (Pty) Ltd, Establishing and Vesting Act 2006.
The assets, liabilities, rights and obligations of the former Lesotho Electricity Corporation were vested in the company. Previously as a Corporation, LEC was established in 1969 in terms of the Electricity Act of 1967 and the Electricity Regulations of 1970.
