Maseru — Japan currently grants short-term, visa-free entry to citizens of 74 countries and territories worldwide. However, coverage remains limited across the African continent.

Among African nations, only Lesotho, Mauritius and Tunisia feature on the confirmed visa-exempt list for traveling to Japan.

The vast majority of African countries are not covered under this current arrangement, meaning their citizens are still required to apply for a visa before traveling to Japan.

Under current bilateral agreements, passport holders from these three nations can travel to Japan for tourism, business or other short-term purposes without going through a visa application process.

Because Japanese immigration regulations rely heavily on strict, reciprocal agreements, exemptions are only granted on a country-by-country basis.

Lesotho and Japan maintain strong bilateral ties anchored by economic aid, education grants and the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) framework. Formal diplomatic relations were established in 1971, with Lesotho citizens enjoying visa-free entry to Japan.

Diplomatic matters are handled via Japan's non-resident Embassy in Pretoria and Lesotho's Embassy in Tokyo.

Japan consistently supports Lesotho's food security and health sectors through organizations like the World Food Programme (WFP). Recent initiatives include multi-million dollar grants to improve community health information systems and construct secondary schools with inclusive educational models.

Both nations collaborate closely under the Tokyo International Conference on African Development. While the trade volume remains modest, Lesotho exports diamonds and clothing to Japan and imports Japanese vehicles and medicines.
