LNLVIP RAISES CONCERN OVER VISUALLY IMPAIRED RIGHTS

Maseru, June 23 — Lesotho National League of Visually Impaired Persons (LNLVIP) has raised a concern over violation of rights of visually impaired children, a few days before the commemoration of Day of African Child.

LNLVIP Executive Director Mr. Keketso Mangope told the Agency in an interview that some parents or guardians still hide their visually impaired children in homes, denying them access to important services such as education and healthcare.

He also noted that negative attitudes within society contribute to the exclusion of visually impaired children, emphasising that children with visual impairment should be fully included in community life and public services as they have the same potential as other children and are also future leaders.

He further reminded that there are schools in the country which accommodate visually impaired children from primary school level to ensure their accessibility to education.

Meanwhile the Ministry of Gender, Youth and Social Development will hold the commemoration of Day of African Child at Nyakosoba in Maseru on Wednesday, under the theme " Ensuring Universal Access to water, sanitation and hygiene for all children in Africa".

Day of African Child is commemorated annually on June 16 to honour the courage of the children who stood up for their rights, raises awareness about ongoing challenges facing African children, and encourages governments, organisations and communities to take action to improve children's welfare.

It also provides a platform for governments to review policies, programs, and initiatives aimed at protecting and promoting children's rights across Africa.
