Makeka Design Lab terminated its contract with the Ministry of Public Works, specifically Building Development Services (BDS) as on the 12th July 2018,  after identifying several issues that affected its ability to deliver the highest standard of professionalism and quality for its work on the Royal Palace of Lesotho.

The Royal Palace has been at the heart of Makeka Design Lab, for more than 6 years.

Makeka Design Lab said the Royal Palace has been and will always be its most prestigious commission as a practice.

It was initially commissioned to do interior design then, as architects and ultimately as the principal agent of the project.

However Makeka further said it believes that  it played a significant role in the redesign of the palace.

As an international award-winning design firm, it has given its  best service, implementing skills acquired over more than 20 years, despite the dire conditions that it found the project in.

On its press release Makeka Design Lab stated that the host of issues it has encountered throughout its association with the project are too numerous, but include financing and questionable decision-making by various stakeholders, which have led to a deterioration of its relations with the clients.

Furthermore it said it is therefore judicious and proficient at this stage, that it withdrew its services for the client to pursue the vision to its fulfillment.

The decision to end the contract is not taken lightly, but ensures that it is not party to any further damage or risk for activities done by others, which can be attributed to the Makeka Design Lab’s professional team.
