Although issuance of E permit is not a new thing, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport is currently conducting consultations in a bid to review the Road Traffic Act of 1981.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Public Works and Transport honourable Matjato Moteane in the National Assembly on Wednesday, when responding to the urgent question asked by a Member of Parliament Mr. Bataung Makhakhe.
The urgent question was asked regarding meetings between the Ministry and Road Traffic Board with some taxi owners, to inform them about their plan to issue the E permit, which will be detrimental to the business, particularly for vehicles using C and D permits, as this is the only business dominated by Basotho nationals and if the Minister was aware of these meetings, how soon will he intervene to salvage this business.
When answering this question Moteane said there is anxiety around issuance of E permit hence consultations, reminding that the permit is issued to vehicles, which ferry people from one place to the other, does not have a specified route, and that it is a close tour operation.
