Social media is ablaze with congratulatory messages for Tukiso Motlomelo of Qacha’s Nek, who achieved a remarkable feat by winning five prestigious awards at a major event in Durban.

Motlomelo was honoured for his exceptional performances in both the 21km and 42.2km categories, earning titles such as Best Male Athlete and Best Time of the Season, alongside a special Chairman’s Award.

The awards, sponsored by Ibhele Nabangani Consulting Engineers and Black Diamond AC Management, have cemented his status as one of Lesotho’s finest athletes.

Olympian Tebello Ramakongoana, Motlomelo’s friend and training partner, joined the chorus of praise. “We’ve worked tirelessly together this year, and his success is an inspiration. This is just the beginning of more great achievements,” Ramakongoana said, extending gratitude to Black Diamond for their unwavering support of Motlomelo.

Motlomelo, speaking to the Agency, shared his excitement and pride. “At the beginning of this year, I told my coach, James McKirdy, that I wanted to win at least three awards—and I exceeded that goal,” he said.

Reflecting on his journey, he credited his victories to standout performances in races like the Eliot Madeira 21km, where he finished first, and the Cape Town Marathon 42km, where he achieved a personal best of 2:17:10.

He noted how his time of 1:03:44 in the 21km category at Durban showcased his growth and determination. “These results show how much progress I’ve made, and they motivate me to push even harder,” he said. With just two years of training under McKirdy, a U.S.-based coach, Motlomelo said he’s seen tremendous improvement.

As he reflects on 2024, Motlomelo called it a breakthrough year, despite limited opportunities in shorter distances like the 10km. His focus on 21km and 42km events, particularly in Durban and Cape Town, exceeded his expectations.

Motlomelo’s success has become a source of national pride, with supporters across Lesotho cheering him on as he sets his sights on greater accomplishments.
