Botha-Bothe, June 5 — A 20-year-old nanny, Matseko Befole of Ha Shepeseli, currently residing at Phaphama, has been sentenced to pay a fine of M2,000 on each of two counts of assault or serve two years' imprisonment on each count after assaulting two five-year-old children and causing them bodily injuries.

Befole was charged with contravening the provisions of Section 30(1), read together with Section 109 of the Penal Code Act, 2010 (Act No. 6 of 2012), relating to assault.

The court heard that on May 29, 2026, the accused assaulted two five-year-old children, Boiketlo and Bokamoso Ratiea, with a stick, causing bruises on their thighs and backs.

The children's mother noticed the injuries and reported the matter to the police.

Investigations revealed that the accused whipped the children after discovering that they had soiled their blankets.

It was further reported that she subsequently bathed them using cold water.

One of the neighbours, Manana Chabalala, testified before the court that she heard noise coming from the house.

Upon investigating, she met the children, who informed her that the nanny had beaten them after they had soiled their blankets.

The court imposed a fine of M2,000 on each count or two years' imprisonment on each count, with the prison sentences to run consecutively.

The accused paid the total fine of M4,000 and was subsequently released.
