Mokhotlong __ Department of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition is currently engaged in a sheep scab campaign in an effort to protect the small stock against scab disease in the district.

The District Animal Production Officer (DAPO) Mr. Bokang Lebatama has said this when giving the Department's activity report to the Head of Departments during their first meeting of 2026.

Mr. Lebatama said the department also attended the lumpy skin disease outbreaks following 16 cases reported to the department last month.

Cases of cattle infected by the disease were covered at different resource centres that include Phahameng, Lehlohla, Thabang and Libibing in the district.

According to the World Organisation on Animal Health, lumpy skin disease is an infectious disease found in cattle that can have significant impacts on animal health and welfare.

While it is not a threat to human health, it is economically important for producers as it can cause a temporary reduction in milk production, impact on fertility, damage to hides and, occasionally, death of cattle.

Furthermore, Mr. Lebatama reported on the Locust outbreak, saying areas affected were Libibing, Linotsing, Lehlohla and parts of Phahameng.
