Maseru — The family of 12-year-old ‘Nete Leotlela, who was severely injured in a dog attack in July, says more than M1.4 million has so far been donated towards his medical treatment and recovery.

Leotlela’s mother, Ms. Lineo Ramantsoe, disclosed the figure as the family provided an update on the money received from members of the public and various organisations since the incident.

Ramantsoe has expressed gratitude to everyone who has contributed to her son’s treatment and recovery, saying the support has helped the family continue to care for their son as he faces a long road to recovery.

The latest figure represents a substantial increase from the amount raised during the early days of the fundraising campaign. Within weeks of the attack, contributions had grown from more than M100,000 to nearly M500,000 as people in Lesotho and abroad responded to appeals for assistance.

Leotlela was attacked by five German Shepherds on July 6 while he was on his way to collect his younger brother from aftercare in Ha Abia, Maseru.

Reports at the time said the boy mistakenly entered a neighbouring property after stopping at the wrong house. He was then attacked by the dogs, suffering severe injuries to his face and head.

The attack left him without both ears and his lower lip and caused extensive injuries to his scalp and face. He was initially treated in Lesotho before being transferred to a hospital in Bloemfontein, South Africa, where he underwent several operations and required specialist medical care.

The cost of his treatment quickly became a major concern for the family, prompting an appeal for financial assistance. At the time, the family said it was difficult to determine the eventual cost because his treatment was ongoing.
The appeal triggered an outpouring of support, with individuals, businesses and organisations contributing towards his medical expenses. Various fundraising activities were also organised to help the family meet the growing costs associated with his recovery.

Among those who supported the campaign was Her Majesty Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso, who launched the “Kick the Ball, Score a Goal for Life” fundraising campaign in support of Leotlela. The ‘Basali ba Pitiki’’ group is among those who came together to raise the money, the campaign that was led by Communications Minister, Mrs. Nthati Moorosi.
His recovery is expected to be a lengthy process, with further treatment and reconstructive procedures likely to be required.
