Qacha’s Nek District, Lesotho – Her Majesty Queen 'Masenate Mohato Seeiso, a prominent advocate for the welfare of young women, spearheaded an event at Hermitage High School in Qacha’s Nek District, underscoring her ongoing commitment to the Hlokomela Banana Initiative. During the engagement, Her Majesty oversaw the handover of 380 sanitary towel packs to the school's female students.
The Hlokomela Banana Initiative, established in 2015 under the auspices of Her Majesty's Queen’s National Trust Fund, is a national campaign dedicated to the provision of free sanitary products to schoolgirls across the country. This vital initiative directly addresses the issue of educational disruption frequently encountered due to a lack of access to essential menstrual hygiene resources.
Since its inception, Hlokomela Banana has achieved significant reach, supporting over 15,000 girls in 91 schools throughout Lesotho. The initiative's long-term objective is to extend its support to all 78,000 school-aged girls in the nation.
The sustained operation of the Hlokomela Banana Initiative is facilitated through collaborative partnerships with diverse stakeholders, including local businesses, non-governmental organizations, and international entities such as Lil-Lets, Letšeng Diamonds, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The significance of the occasion was further highlighted by the attendance of the Honourable Pitso Lesaoana, the Minister of Social Development, affirming the government's dedication to the well-being and empowerment of girls nationwide.
This distribution at Hermitage High School exemplifies the continued efforts of Her Majesty and the Hlokomela Banana Initiative to ensure that young women possess the necessary resources to maintain their dignity and pursue their education without impediment.
